Health and Wellness is a Decision
Feb 17th, 2010 | By Courtney David Roth | Category: Total WellnessI hear many people talk about the struggles
of maintaining a healthy weight or building
muscle or getting off medications.
You can sense the pain and struggle in
their voice and in their body language.
The saddest part about the millions of
Americans struggling with their health
is that most will continue to struggle
their entire life.
That can mean only one thing….
They are content with their pain.
They have accepted the struggle
as something they HAVE to live with.
They have consciously or subconsciously
decided that they can’t get healthy or
that getting healthy sucks more than
being fat or having heart problems or
being depressed.
Either way, most CHOOSE to stay unhealthy.
Most choose pain.
Most choose higher health care costs.
Most choose a lower quality of life.
For most it IS A CHOICE.
To me that’s refreshing. I love that
I have a choice but most people get
defensive when they read or hear
“It’s your fault.”
“It’s not my fault.”
“I’m too busy.”
“Eating healthy is expensive.”
“I don’t have time to cook.”
“I can’t afford a gym membership.”
“I hate to exercise.”
“I don’t know what to do.”
“My health isn’t THAT bad.”
I’ve stayed fit my whole life
thus far so I can’t relate to
denial when it comes to a
poor diet or a poor fitness level.
But I have gone through change
in other aspects of life.
Between the ages of 16-26ish
I had the mindset of a party-boy
jock. To keep this example short,
I drank too much and didn’t take
responsibility towards starting a
career.
I justified partying and being lazy
with work and was in denial about
the negative consequences of
partying and career laziness just
like many Americans justify their
poor diet and fitness levels…
just like many Americans are in
denial about the negative consequences
of a poor diet and of a poor fitness
level.
So what happened to me?
How did I change?
Change is a science. There is
a formula to change. Everyone
uses the same formula.
Awareness –> Accurate thinking
of yourself –> Accurate thinking
of what you want to be –> Decision
to change –> Constant action (lifelong)
towards becoming the person you
want to be.
I’m speaking about transformation.
Transformation can only happen when
your eyes are opened to the truth.
Awareness happens when something
profound slaps you in the face.
That “something” may be a broken relationship,
trouble with the law, poor finances, a heart
attack, depression, etc….
It might be an acute situation; something
traumatic. It might be a chronic situation
that builds up over time like depression…
but there is a moment of awareness and a
moment of decision. There is a moment
of understanding truth or ignoring truth.
An accurate assessment of yourself is so
powerful. See yourself as you truly are.
It’s humbling.
It usually hurts.
It hurt me.
It still hurts when I think about
what I was. But it feels great
thinking about what I AM and what
I’m becoming.
Transformation.
What are you becoming?
It’s a choice. We get to decide.
I love that.
Meaningful change takes external
support. You need help. I needed
help.
My support first came through
reading. Then I progressed to
prayer. Then I progressed to
conversation with amazing
people.
You have to change what you
read, what you watch, what
you think, and who you talk to.
In terms of changing your fitness
levels and nutritional habits I
strongly suggest using an awesome
personal trainer.
Disclaimer: I AM an awesome personal
trainer:-)
Seek change and change agents will
appear. Change agents are usually
books and people.
Then it’s all about action.
